Common Newt

is a slim amphibian with small extremities and long head. Male have a striped head, back and sides metal-green, brownish with small dark spots. Female usually has ochre or brown coloration with small dark spots and yellow bright belly. Breeding takes place in water from April until June, in small water ponds. In this period, females grow a tall crest. Newts live dug in in the ground and seek water primarily for breeding from the age of three. Their food on dry land consists of small insects, larvae, spiders, earthworms and gasteropoda. In the CZ it belongs among endangered species.
