Red-backed Shrike
Larger than a sparrow (with a body length of 16–18 cm), this bird sports a long tail and a fairly strong hooked bill. Its weight ranges from 22.5 – 34 grams. There is pronounced sexual dimorphism between the sexes. The male has an ash grey head with a broad black stripe through the eye, red-brown upperparts and pink underparts tinged with brown. The tail is black with white lateral spots at the root. The female has off-white, lightly vermiculate underparts, a brown or brownish-grey head, a brown eye stripe and dull brown upperparts. The young are similar to the female, but also with strong vermiculation on the upper part of the body and tertiary feathers that end in beige tips, lined with black stripes toward the end.
