Variegated Horsetail

A perennial plant, mostly 10-40 cm high. Stems are erect and grooved. The stem sheaths are bell-shaped, black in colour on the lower nodes, while green in colour on the middle and upper nodes, with a black band across (under the teeth). The spore-bearing cone is egg-shaped, almost an ellipsoid, with a pointy end at the top. Grows on bog meadows in the Czech Republic, and occasionally as a pioneer plant on gravelly and sandy fluvial sediments.
