European Hornbeam
is a robust monoecious broad-leaved tree that grows up to 25 m. It has a massive, arched, sometimes irregular treetop. The trunk of hornbeam is covered in grey smooth bark, its branches in shiny brown. It blooms from April, the male inflorescence comprises of up to 5 cm long catkins, bunchy female catkins with trilobate bracteal envelopes grow on annual shoots. European hornbeam fruit is a nut in trilobate bracteal envelope. The plant grows well in groves and mixed forests in lower locations.
