Black Grouse

The Black Grouse is a medium-sized game bird. The males are black all over, with white under-tail coverts, a white wing bar, and white wing lining. Striking are the red wattles above the eye and the lyre-shaped tail. The female is of an inconspicuous drab color with black stripes. Black Grouse thrive in a variety of biotopes, from marshes and bogs, to forest aisles and heaths. It primarily feeds on plants, but in spring also seeks out animal prey, primarily beetles and ants.
