At the Training Ground

The site "Na cvičišti" (At the Training Ground) is a unique place found within the suburban forest park of Valašské Meziříčí. Up until 1997, the army used these eleven hectares of land to train troops in crossing streams of water with makeshift bridges, but also for water management purposes. Thanks to the movement of ground troops for almost five decades, the site gave rise to valuable ecological communities, and the local fish pond has become home to a great variety of animals, such as mussels, crayfish, and ducks. Moreover, more than 20 dragonfly species occur in the area.

With the support of the NET4GAS Closer to Nature programme, the local ČSOP chapter Valašské Meziříčí built an educational trail paved with wooden planks around the pond in 2011. This was the first trail within the programme that was specifically designed to be handicapped-friendly and which is thus also accessible to the wheel-chaired or to families with baby carriages.
