Great Crested Grebe

is an elegant bird with ashen to brown feathers and small black feather crests at the top of the head. Both sexes have the same coloration. Great crested grebe is an inhabitant of stagnant waters and slowly flowing rivers. Its diet comprises of fish, insects, frogs. It builds buoyant nest from branches, water plants or reed and hides it in the thick water vegetation. It nests from April. After hatching, parents carry the young on their backs. Their lifespan can exceed seven years. Great crested grebe is an endangered species.
