Common Kingfisher

also called the "Flying Jewel". This little bird with turquoise-blue wings and head has blue to rust-coloured underparts. It lives near slow-moving and clean water courses where it has favourable conditions for nesting. They use their bills to excavate burrows in vertical riverbanks. It attains maturity in the second year of life. It has a lifespan of approximately three years. Common kingfisher has become a protected species (severely endangered).
