Common Cottongrass

A 40–60 cm high herbaceous perennial plant that forms almost no tussocks. The leaves grow from the lower half of the stem and are only a few millimetres broad. The inflorescence consists of spikes growing on the rounded stem. The plant's tell-tale characteristic consists of fuzzy corollae, with white awns that grow to up to 4 cm during the blooming period, which is in April and May. Cottongrass grows on reliably waterlogged, acidic soils, on wet meadows, and on peat bogs and fens. In the Czech Republic, it is ubiquitous, from lowlands to the high mountains.
