Sand Lizard

is one of the most widely spread species of lizards in the CZ. Its numbers fell sharply due to the loss of habitats and it has become severely endangered. Including the tail it is approximately 20 cm long. In danger, lizard can shed its tail, which regrows again. Both sexes have spots of various sizes on their bodies. They primarily feed on smaller insects. Lizards occupy mostly dry and sunny locations. In winter they hibernate. They breed in May and June and young animals attain maturity at 1.5 to 2 years.
