Alpine Newt

is a medium-sized amphibian. Males reach the size of 8 cm, females up to 11 cm. In the spawning season, Alpine newts live in the water, otherwise they mostly live hidden terrestrially. Males exhibit rich coloration in the mating period, females are less noticeable. Throughout the day they are hidden in covers, at night they go hunting for various insects, spiders or worms. In the autumn they seek frost-free shelters and in the spring they migrate to their spawning pools. Alpine newt and common newt are severely endangered species.
